Run DMC was an American hip hop group that was formed in Hollis, Queens, New York in 1981. The group consisted of Joseph "Run" Simmons, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, and Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell.
Run DMC was one of the most influential and successful groups in hip hop history. They are credited with pioneering the "new school" of hip hop, which focused on more aggressive and abrasive beats and rhymes than the "old school" style that preceded it.
The group's debut album, "Run-D.M.C.", was released in 1984 and was a commercial success, eventually going platinum. Their second album, "King of Rock", was released the following year and was also a success, reaching number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart.
However, it was the group's third album, "Raising Hell", that truly cemented their place in hip hop history. The album, which was released in 1986, featured the hit singles "My Adidas", "Walk This Way" (a collaboration with rock group Aerosmith), and "It's Tricky". "Raising Hell" was a massive success, selling over three million copies and reaching number six on the Billboard 200 chart.
Run DMC continued to release successful albums throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, including "Tougher Than Leather" (1988), "Back from Hell" (1990), and "Down with the King" (1993).
Tragically, on October 30, 2002, Jam Master Jay was shot and killed in a recording studio in Queens. The case remains unsolved to this day.
Despite the loss of their friend and bandmate, Run and DMC continued to perform together on occasion, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
Run DMC's influence on hip hop and popular music cannot be overstated. They helped to bring rap music to a wider audience, and their unique style and approach to hip hop have inspired countless artists in the decades since their formation.
