Marley Marl

 Marlon Lu'Ree Williams, known as Marley Marl, is an influential American DJ, rapper, and record producer who played a pivotal role in shaping hip-hop music. Born on September 30, 1962, he grew up in Queens, New York, and became immersed in the early rap scene.


Marley Marl's career took off when DJ Mr. Magic recognized his talent, leading to their collaboration in founding the Juice Crew in 1983. Together, they established Cold Chillin' Records in 1984. Marley's innovative use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine became a signature element of his production style.

His breakthrough came with Roxanne Shante's hit "Roxanne's Revenge" in 1984. Throughout the late 1980s, Marley Marl and the Juice Crew gained prominence, with Marley producing entire albums for various artists. In 1996, he faced legal issues with Cold Chillin', but he continued his contributions to hip-hop, including producing KRS-One's album "Hip Hop Lives" in 2007.

Marley's discography includes studio albums like "In Control, Volume 1" (1988) and collaborative works such as "Hip-Hop Lives" (2007) with KRS-One. His impact on hip-hop is enduring, influencing artists like Biggie Smalls, RZA, DJ Premier, Madlib, and Pete Rock.
